Synopsis
The film is based on a poetry book of the same name written by Feri Lainšček and Dušan Šarotar, which was published in 2004 by the Franc Franc publishing house from Murska Sobota. Shooting took place on various locations throughout the Prekmurje region. Above all, it is a film about the word, the wind, the unseen, that which is only inside us and nowhere else, some perhaps call it soul, perhaps just a feeling.
Feeling the wind is a poetical portrait of the Pannonian landscape, explored by the director Maja Weiss through the instruments of poetry, music, photography and an extensive journey across the plains.
The book Feeling the wind is a common work of poets Feri Lainšček and Dušan Šarotar, photographer Jože Suhadolnik and designers Miha Grobler and Matej Koren. It includes a compact disc with musical compositions written by Marko Grobler with lyrics by Feri Lainšček, performed by the musical group Feeling the wind and vocalist Moira. The book Feeling the wind is a singular spiritual monograph of Prekmurje as well as a constituent part of a broader artistic project.
In 2007, sculptor Tomaž Kolarič and director Maja Weiss joined the project Feeling the wind. Tomaž Kolarič conceived the thematic groundwork and made a prototype of the Pannonian ear sculpture, a listener to the wind, the installation of which will enable the transposition of the naturally occurring sounds of Prekmurje into the internet by way of electronic media. Director Maja Weiss made a poetic documentary titled Feeling the wind. All artists participating in the project appear in the film, along with numerous other prominent artists from the Prekmurje region.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
We, the authors, conceived this project as a unique artistic journey in pursuit of a sense of the wind, which we understand as a metaphor for silence, mystery, and something entirely otherworldly. This profoundly defines a landscape, giving it a unique, irreplaceable melody and sentiment. We pursued this sense of the wind within the geographically confined space of Prekmurje, but our inspirations also stemmed from a much broader spiritual context, which we describe with the term “steppe melancholy.” It was precisely this concept we wanted to explore more thoroughly and present to a wider audience. This is, of course, an ostensibly familiar concept or pattern, often mistakenly and stereotypically linked with the image of flatlands and the sensibility of its inhabitants. Such associations typically involve an idealized and primarily locally confined folkloric picture, which lacks room for the geographical dimension, artistic depth, and spiritual complexity of the Pannonian region. We are convinced that the report of our journey can be authentic and exciting, while also artistically convincing, bold, and new.
