ABOUT
In 1985, Peter Braatz got exclusive rights to document the making of the cult thriller Blue Velvet by David Lynch. Most of this footage has stayed hidden until now.
The film Blue Velvet Revisited uses Super 8 footage, sound recordings, photos, paintings, objects, and relics that Braatz collected during filming. These materials have been carefully edited into a new film, telling the story entirely through images created by the documentary’s author, Peter Braatz.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
The film Blue Velvet Revisited is a dive into a specific time and place in the past. It is an essay and a rediscovery. It tells the story from the personal perspective of a German filmmaker who, by chance, found himself on the set of a landmark in 20th-century cinema.
But perhaps it wasn’t mere chance. Did this film wait so many years to be created, almost disappearing forever in the process?
There were many questions to answer and thoughts and emotions to uncover. I immersed myself in four hours of Super 8 footage, two hours of 16mm film footage from Munich in 1987, hours of video material from German promotional content for Blue Velvet, over a thousand photographs, objects, sketches, and memories. I realized there was still so much undiscovered, with a wealth of material to choose from and endless possibilities for connections.
I had much to say, hear, see, and feel. Blue Velvet Revisited is my journey of rediscovering a treasure I needed to touch again to make it bloom and shine once more.

PRESS REVIEWS
Peter Braatz has crafted a poetic work about Blue Velvet, rich with memories—captivating and unusual—offering film enthusiasts a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this controversial film, now considered a voyeuristic classic. He refers to it as a “meditation.”

The film is a quietly mesmerizing sensory experience, with a distinctive rhythm and look that makes it a stand-alone artwork rather than a mimetic mirror of its subject.
The result is a gorgeous, intoxicating Super-8 time capsule, a poem that eschews traditional narrative in favor of a hypnotic collage of never-before-seen footage, archival photographs, and audio recordings, all set to an appropriately dreamy soundtrack by Tuxedomoon and Cult With No Name.

Lynch gets along well with Braatz, who has demonstrated his refined directorial sensibility. With his material, he pays homage to the master and shows that he trusts the depiction of the hidden quality of his creative power. Blue Velvet Revisited, with its excellent music and rare on-set footage, is pure nirvana for Lynch admirers. Even those not particularly interested in filmmaking will be captivated by this charming gem.

…Blue Velvet Revisited is far from a conventional making-of collage. It’s a film for Lynch and Blue Velvet enthusiasts, offering many insights. Much like Lynch’s work, Blue Velvet Revisited is unconventional, but some will find endless enjoyment in it.

Blue Velvet Revisited is a poetic reflection on a moment in time, a metaphysical observation of Peter Braatz’s experiences on the set of Blue Velvet.

Neon lights and graphic titles, such as the beautifully named “Do It for Van Gogh,” are among the only seemingly modern elements in the film. They complement the exceptional behind-the-scenes footage and rare photographs in Peter Braatz’s work. The film appeals even to those who have never seen Blue Velvet…

Film ni forenzična analiza Lyncheve izzivalne grozljivke iz leta 1986.
Rather than just a behind-the-scenes story, Blue Velvet Revisited is a vivid cinematic record—at times mysterious, visually stunning, and accompanied by beautiful music.

Občudovalci nadnaravnega, čudovitega in vznemirljivega sveta Davida Lyncha ne smejo prezreti liričnega dokumentarnega filma Petra Braatza.

Braatz meticulously reveals how Lynch made the film of his dreams.
A highlight of the film is an off-screen conversation between a young Braatz and a young Lynch about a girl Braatz fell in love with in Germany. Equally captivating is Lynch’s narration about his excitement during the filming of Blue Velvet and how enjoyable the process was for him and the crew.
